THE BOMBERS
sadly, yet again,
the bombers are off
to bomb
humanity
one size
fits all
nothing else
they could
possibly do
so
might as well do it
blow to pieces
(so
far beneath us
we cannot see it)
the image of self
we hate
to its core;
do not believe
This poem is a stark and cutting critique of the dehumanizing nature of war, particularly aerial bombing. The detached, almost resigned tone (“might as well do it”) contrasts with the horror of destruction, highlighting how violence becomes normalized. The phrase “one size / fits all” suggests indiscriminate killing, while the lines “(so / far beneath us / we cannot see it)” imply both physical distance (bombers high above) and moral detachment. The final lines point to self-deception—the “image of self” that societies uphold despite committing atrocities, revealing a deep hypocrisy we refuse to confront. A powerful, unsettling reflection on war and denial.
